At least seven people were killed in a suicide bombing at a wedding in a Pakistani region near the Afghan border, police said, quoted by Reuters, BTA reported.

The attack comes as the country struggles to cope with a wave of extremist violence.

In the Dera Ismail Khan district of northwestern Pakistan, an explosion rocked a building where a wedding ceremony was taking place. It was attended by members of a peacekeeping committee, police officer Muhammad Adnan said. These committees are made up of local residents and elders and are supported by Islamabad as part of its efforts to counter Islamist militants in areas along the Afghan border.

Four of those injured in the attack, out of 12 who were injured, died in hospital, Adnan added. Three more people were confirmed dead yesterday. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Pakistani Taliban, also known as the "Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan", which operates on both sides of the Afghan border, has described the members of the peace committees as traitors.

The Pakistani Taliban is an alliance of several Sunni militant groups that have been fighting the state since 1997. Their stated goal is to replace Pakistan's system of government with their strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Islamabad accuses the Taliban in Afghanistan of allowing the Pakistani group to plan its attacks from Afghan territory. Kabul rejects the accusations, saying the militant activity is Pakistan's internal problem.
