Former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said on Monday that he rejects American interference in Iraq's internal affairs after US President Donald Trump threatened to cut off support for the country if Maliki is elected prime minister, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

"I will continue to work until we reach the end, in a way that serves the supreme interests of the Iraqi people," he wrote in an article in "Ex".

Nuri al-Maliki, who was ready for a political comeback despite accusations that he fueled sectarian tensions and allowed the rise of "Islamic State", now finds himself in the crosshairs of US President Donald Trump, Reuters notes.

Trump warned Iraq on Thursday that if it re-elects Iran-backed Maliki as prime minister, Washington will no longer help the major oil producer and close U.S. ally.
