US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of a new large-scale strike against Iran, as previous negotiations between Washington and Tehran to limit the nuclear program and the production of ballistic missiles did not yield results, writes CNN, citing sources quoted by Focus.
Among the options that Trump is considering are US military air strikes against Iranian leaders and security officials who are believed to be responsible for the killings of protesters. Strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and government institutions are also being considered.
According to sources on the American television, Trump has not yet made a final decision.
"At best, he wants to deliver a powerful and convincing blow that will force Tehran to accept the US terms regarding weapons," one of the officials said. If an order is given to attack Iran, Trump will want to declare victory as soon as possible, the media outlet said.
According to the television channel, in early January, Iran and the US held preliminary talks through diplomats from Oman and with the participation of Trump's representative - Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The parties discussed a possible meeting to prevent a US strike, but it never took place, the sources reported. Other sources say there have been no serious direct talks between the two sides.
According to a person familiar with the latest US intelligence reports, Iran is trying to rebuild its nuclear facilities even deeper underground since the US strike in June. The regime has also barred the UN nuclear watchdog from inspecting its facilities.
