A man and a woman convicted by an Islamic tribunal of extramarital sex in the conservative Aceh province in western Indonesia have been sentenced to 140 lashes, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reported.
The man and woman, whose ages were not specified, each received 140 lashes, including 100 for extramarital sex and 40 for drinking alcohol, Muhammad Rizal, the police chief in Aceh, told AFP – the only Indonesian province to have implemented sharia law.
The woman fainted during the punishment and was taken away by ambulance.
It is one of the harshest sentences since Islamic law came into force in the province in 2001.
Four other people were also publicly whipped today, including a police officer and his partner who were convicted of having sex outside of marriage. They each received 23 lashes.
Indonesia banned extramarital sex in its latest penal code in 2022, which came into force across the archipelago in 2026.
