Canada will suffer consequences if it makes a trade deal with China, US President Donald Trump said.

“If they make a deal with China, we'll do something significant. If they make the deal they want, China will own Canada“, he told reporters.

According to the US head of state, Beijing will, first of all, put an end to hockey.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney paid an official visit to China from January 14 to 17 - the first visit by a head of government in eight years. Carney and President Xi Jinping agreed to strengthen trade and economic partnerships and reached agreements on electric vehicles, agricultural products and fisheries.

Last week, the US leader said that if Ottawa reaches a deal with Beijing, Washington will immediately impose 100% tariffs. The Canadian prime minister countered that his country does not intend to conclude a free trade agreement with China in line with its obligations under CUSMA.

In early January, Bloomberg reported that Canadians fear they will become Trump's next target after Greenland and Venezuela.

In 2025, he called outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "governor of the great state of Canada" amid disagreements over the possible imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods. Trump later said that Canada could avoid trade tariffs and receive military protection if it joined the United States.
