US President Donald Trump said that negotiations with Europe on Greenland are already underway.

He believes that a lot of things have already been agreed upon. The American leader made this statement in a conversation with reporters. The broadcast was published on the White House YouTube channel.

„We have started negotiations and I think there is a significant amount of agreement on them. I think it will be a good deal for everyone. A very important deal from a national security perspective. I think we will get this deal done“, Trump said.

Earlier, on January 28, talks were held between the United States, Greenland and Denmark, Reuters reported. The parties discussed security issues in the Arctic.

Since returning to the White House in January 2025, Donald Trump has repeatedly stated the need to establish US control over Greenland. He justified his claims to the island with national security concerns and did not rule out the use of military force to achieve this goal.

On January 17, Trump announced the imposition of 10% tariffs on goods from eight European countries. The tariffs were planned to increase to 25% on June 1. In response, European countries began discussing retaliatory tariffs and issued a joint statement condemning Trump's actions.

Later, NATO Secretary General Marco Rutte and Trump held talks on security issues in Greenland and the Arctic region. The US president announced that they had laid the foundations for a future agreement on Greenland. Trump also announced that he had abandoned the idea of imposing tariffs on European countries.

In his speech in Davos, Trump said that the United States had abandoned the option of acquiring the island by force.
