US President Donald Trump said that he could help the UN avoid the danger of financial collapse.
A similar prospect emerged after Washington earlier announced its withdrawal from some of the agencies affiliated with the world organization and reduced funding for them, and some of the country's mandatory contributions were terminated.
This prompted Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to call on countries to pay their debts a few days ago, warning that the UN risks running out of money and going bankrupt by early July.
Representatives of the organization told the New York Times that the lack of funds could even lead to the closure of its building in New York.
In an interview with Politico, Trump said he could get countries to provide the money, similar to what he did to increase defense contributions for NATO members.
The president stressed that the result could be very quick if the UN were asked for his help. He also dismissed the possibility of the organization closing its headquarters, saying the United Nations has "incredible potential".
