Syrian authorities said they had detained militants believed to be behind several missile strikes on the Mezeh military airport, southwest of the capital Damascus, Reuters reported.

According to Syrian investigators, the weapons used to attack the airport were originally part of the arsenal of the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah.

Authorities have seized several drones that militants planned to use in future attacks.

The Syrian Interior Ministry said all those involved in the attacks had been detained. The arrests were made following intelligence operations in several areas of Damascus.

The weapons originally belonged to "Hezbollah", an ally of former President Bashar al-Assad. The Shiite group once had a significant military presence in Syria and supported Assad's army, the Syrian Interior Ministry said in a statement.

According to Syrian officials, "Hezbollah" has left behind weapons depots, including drones, in some parts of Syria after withdrawing its forces following the fall of the Assad regime.

"Hezbollah" has denied Damascus' accusations and said it has no activity on Syrian territory.
