The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, has rejected calls for a pan-European army and warned that this could be “extremely dangerous“.

The topic has become relevant amid tensions within NATO over US President Donald Trump's threats to annex Greenland.

“If you are already part of NATO, then you cannot create a separate army“, Kaia Kallas said at a security conference in Norway. Kallas pointed out that the most important military asset in a crisis “is the chain of command - who gives orders to whom“.

And if you have a European army and then you have NATO, then you are just falling between two chairs, added the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Calls for the creation of a pan-European army were also rejected by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
