Former US President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have agreed to appear before the House Oversight Committee as part of its investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, The New York Times reported.

The publication notes that the couple has given in to Republican demands just days before the House of Representatives vote for contempt of Congress.

The couple had previously refused to comply with a subpoena from the Committee Chairman James Comer for several months, calling the investigation "politically motivated". The decision to change their position came after some Democrats on the committee joined Republicans in seeking criminal charges against Clinton for her refusal to cooperate.

Clinton's upcoming testimony before lawmakers will be a nearly unprecedented event: no former U.S. president has testified before Congress since 1983. The committee intends to focus on high-ranking Democrats' ties to the late Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. Despite attempts by lawyers to limit the questioning to four hours, the committee chairman rejected that proposal, calling it insufficient.
