The Minister of National Defense of Romania, Radu Miruca, stated on the air of Digi24 that the expectation that every flying object will be stopped at the border is correct, but the idea of a wall against drones is a utopia that does not exist anywhere, BTA reported.

“The idea of a wall against drones is unrealistic. We still do not have a wall. There is no (such) wall in Poland, there is no wall in the Scandinavian countries. This wall of drones, where someone, as in a computer game, places a curtain through which absolutely nothing passes, is a utopia“, explained Miruca.

He assured that the authorities are protecting populated areas and activating ground mechanisms depending on the strategy of Russian attacks on the Danube. According to him, this strategy has worked so far.

Commenting on the intensity of Russian drone attacks on the Danube and the fact that fragments of them often cross Romanian airspace, Radu Miruca noted: “I see a sequence that varies slightly depending on the weather conditions“.

According to the minister, the key to these attacks are the Danube ports in Ukraine, located 100-200 meters from the Romanian coast.

When asked about the promised anti-drone defense system, Miruca confirmed that it exists, but is not fully operational.

“The system can carry out attacks, but there are limitations when connecting to other systems that contribute to deterring drones“, he specified.

During his interview with Digi24, the minister also commented that Romania has been steadily increasing spending for two years for defense and now it must develop its defense industry. He compared the situation to a family with a two-room apartment.

„One room, the Romanian army, is clean, and the other room, which should be producing, has broken windows and we are sabotaging ourselves. We pay double for maintenance because the windows there are broken and the heat is leaking out. We have to stop this“, noted Miruca.

When asked if Romania is concerned about a possible withdrawal of American soldiers from Europe, in the context in which European Commissioner for Defense Andrew Cubilius stated that Europe must be prepared for this scenario, Radu Miruca replied:

„We have to worry about Romania being able to defend Romania, Europe being able to defend Europe, NATO being able to defend NATO member states. As for the Americans, there was a rotation at the end of last year. I have no information that a new one is coming in Romania“.

During the interview, the minister announced that the “Smerdan“ training ground, where joint exercises with American participation have been held in recent days, will be expanded.
