A 55-year-old man has died trying to cross a swollen river near the town of Komotini, northern Greece, Greek state television ERT reported, quoted by BTA.

The accident occurred when the man tried to cross the Vozvozi River with his car through a ford, ignoring signs posted by police that the ford was closed due to heavy rainfall in recent days.

The situation is also complicated after the heavy rains on the Peloponnese peninsula, where the rainfall flooded roads in the municipality of Pyrgos and caused schools in the area to close.

Thousands of homes there are without water supply after a breakdown as a result of the floods, reports ERT.

A new landslide has also occurred on the Ionian Highway along the western coast of Greece, which was recently closed again due to a landslide.

The authorities are concerned because heavy rains are expected next week, according to forecasts.
