As of last night, ship traffic through the Bosphorus Strait near Istanbul has been suspended in both directions. The reason for the closure is thick fog, which has covered the metropolis since last night, BTA reported.

Visibility has dropped to critical levels, necessitating the closure of the Bosphorus, a statement from the General Directorate of Coast Guard at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure says.

Ships are waiting at anchor in the open sea for the opening of the strait.

Traffic in the Bosphorus is expected to be restored after the fog dissipates.
