The American president plans the first meeting of his so-called "Peace Council" to take place this month. The purpose of the meeting scheduled for February 19 in Washington is to raise money for the reconstruction of the destroyed Gaza Strip. This is stated in a letter that was sent to all participants in the "Peace Council". The Associated Press has a copy of the document, ARD reports. A number of other media outlets in the US also reported on the upcoming meeting.
It is planned to include both those heads of state and government who accepted Trump's invitation to participate in the new body in January, as well as members of the Executive Committee for Gaza. This committee will have to take care of the specific issues surrounding the governance, security and reconstruction of war-torn Gaza.
This was reported by two government representatives of the United States. It is still unclear how many heads of state and government will follow the invitation to the forum in Washington and whether a representative of Bulgaria will be among them.
Refusals from many European countries
The “Peace Council“ created by Trump in January is seen by many European countries, including Germany, as competition to the UN and is therefore being rejected. Contrary to initial expectations, it will clearly not be a body that will focus solely on controlling the peace process in Gaza.
The news portal Axios reports that most Western allies have refused to join it because the organization's charter gives it very broad powers, and Trump has the exclusive right to veto its decisions. Among the members of Trump's “Peace Council” are Hungary, Israel, Belarus, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Bulgaria has not yet ratified its participation in the new organ.
