A death sentence was carried out in Florida - the first for the southern US state and the second in the country since the beginning of this year, AFP reported, BTA reported.

Ronald Heath, 64, received the heaviest sentence in 1990 for the murder of a street vendor the previous year. His sentence was carried out yesterday afternoon local time by lethal injection - more than 35 years later.

His brother Kenneth Heath was sentenced to life in prison as an accomplice in the murder of Michael Sheridan.

Last year, 19 people were executed in Florida - more than in any other US state, AFP notes. The state is scheduled to carry out two more executions, on February 24 and March 3.

Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican who signed the execution orders, said the death penalty allows for justice to be served to the victims' families.

Last year, 47 people were executed in the United States, the most since 2009, when there were 52.

The first execution in the country this year was on January 28 in Texas.

The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 US states. Three others - California, Oregon and Pennsylvania - are observing a moratorium on executions by order of the governor, according to Agence France-Presse.

Apart from the United States, Japan is the other G-7 country where executions are carried out.
