Kosovo's new parliament approved a new government led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti on Sunday, ending a year-long political deadlock, the Associated Press reported.

Lawmakers backed Kurti's cabinet by a vote of 66 to 49 in the 120-seat parliament. The vote came hours after the assembly convened for its first session since early elections in December.

Kurti secured a new mandate after his Self-Determination Movement (SDM) won 57 seats in parliament in the December elections.

The party has formed a coalition with several ethnic minority groups.

In his speech to parliament, Kurti promised to fight corruption and invest in the defense of the country of about two million people.

Earlier yesterday, MPs elected former Justice Minister Albulena Haxhiu as speaker of parliament.
