A passenger ferry capsized in Sudan's Nile River, killing at least 15 people, a medical organization reported, quoted by the Associated Press.

The ferry, carrying at least 27 people, including women and children, sank in the Shendi area of the northern Nile River province, the Sudan Doctors Network, a medical organization that monitors the country's ongoing war, said.

According to the organization, the bodies of at least 15 people have been recovered, while residents and rescue teams are still searching for at least six people. Six others survived the tragedy, medics added.

The group called on authorities to send special rescue teams and equipment to speed up search efforts.

Such tragedies involving overloaded vessels are not uncommon in the African country, where safety measures are often neglected, the AP noted.
