Orban: Accepting Ukraine into the EU would drag Europe into war

The better option is a strategic partnership with Kiev, but not membership in the union, believes the Hungarian Prime Minister

Europe should choose a strategic partnership with Ukraine, instead of deciding on its accession to the European Union, said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

„Admitting Ukraine would drag Europe into war. We are not against cooperation, but EU membership is the wrong path. "Strategic partnership, not membership, is the responsible choice," he wrote on his blog.

The Hungarian prime minister's reaction came in response to an article published by Politico that outlined a five-step EU plan to accelerate Ukraine's accession to the EU by 2027. The plan also includes overcoming Hungary's position within the European Union, as some European politicians are counting on the possible defeat of Prime Minister Viktor Orban in future elections, which could lead to Hungary being led by a politician more loyal to Ukraine.

Orban previously called the EU plan to accelerate Ukraine's accession to the EU an "open declaration of war" against Budapest.
