Allies must actively increase their defense capabilities and act in accordance with American interests, otherwise Washington will be ready to act independently, the newspaper writes.

Representatives of the administration of US President Donald Trump at a security conference in Munich privately made it clear to European allies that they expect them to support the course of revising the international order. This opinion was expressed on Saturday by the newspaper Politico.

According to the publication, despite the conciliatory public rhetoric of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the “common destinies“ of the US and Europe, Washington's private signal has been sharp. Allies must increase their defense capabilities and act in accordance with American interests, otherwise the United States will be ready to act alone. Politico notes that American officials have spoken of a transition from a “world of values“ to a “world of interests“.

Some European officials have expressed concern that Washington's approach to relations with Europe has not changed significantly since Trump returned to power, despite the softer tone of recent public statements, the newspaper writes.
