German police discovered the mummified body of a centenarian woman after receiving a tip from the mayor of the village where she lived, who was worried that he had not been able to congratulate her on her birthday. Police suspect that the woman's daughter hid her mother's body for years to collect her pension, the German newspaper “Bild“ reported today, quoted by BTA.
The mayor of the Bavarian village of Rummansfelden, Werner Treuber, used to personally congratulate Sophie B., who was born in 1922, every year. In recent years, he has also tried to do so, but each time the door to her house was locked. He contacted the woman's daughter each time, but each time she made up some reason, to justify his mother's absence from her home.
On December 30, 2025, the mayor finally decided to call the police after not believing the latest explanations of the 82-year-old daughter, who told him that her mother had actually died two years ago in the Czech Republic.
The police broke into the house on February 5 and found a “heavily mummified corpse“ in the elderly lady's home, a statement said. The autopsy was unable to specify either the cause or the date of death, but it dated “several years ago“, with no “data of murder”, the statement specified.
On the other hand, a fraud investigation has been launched, as it is suspected that the deceased's daughter continued to receive her late mother's pension, it was reported police.
According to “Bild“ Sophie's health insurance card had not been used “for more than ten years“, but her pension of “around 1,500 euros had been paid regularly.
According to Bavarian police, the suspected daughter “was admitted to a specialist clinic“.
