Cyclone Gezany kills 62 in Madagascar

13 still missing

The death toll from tropical cyclone Gezany in Madagascar has reached at least 62, with 13 people still missing after the storm hit Madagascar's second-largest city, Toamasina, on February 10, according to the latest figures released today, AFP reported.

Most of the victims of Gezany were registered in Toamasina, which has a population of about 400,000, according to updated information published today by the national disaster and risk management office. Earlier, 59 victims were reported.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said today that 35,000 people were displaced, and 382,000 people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

The damage to residential buildings is significant - 25,000 homes have been completely destroyed, as well as over 750 school buildings.

Cyclone "Gezani" continued its path towards Mozambique. Although it passed 50 km from the coast, the cyclone claimed the lives of at least 4 people and caused damage in the province of Inhambane in southern Mozambique, whose capital of the same name has a population of about 100,000 inhabitants.
