The Peace Council is the only initiative that can lead to a peaceful settlement of the conflict in the Gaza Strip and in the entire Middle East, said Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar, quoted by the TASR news agency, BTA reported.

Blanar attended the inaugural session of the Council in Washington as an observer yesterday, where he reiterated that Slovakia has not accepted to join the initiative of US President Donald Trump.

However, the observer status gives Slovakia the opportunity to monitor all important activities related to the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution of last November, while contributing to them, as actions are necessary to achieve peace, the minister said.

"The Slovak government has supported this peace initiative from the very beginning and in our opinion the only correct and final solution "The Israeli-Palestinian issue is a two-state solution," Blanár said.

Within the Washington session, Blanár held several bilateral meetings with leaders and ministers, which he also used to discuss support for Slovakia's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

On January 22, US President Donald Trump established the Peace Council. Initially, it was presented as an initiative for the post-war reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, but the organization's charter does not limit its activities to the enclave. According to Trump, the Council could in the future perform some functions of the UN.
