German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he would hold talks with European allies to find a common response to US President Donald Trump's new tariffs on US imports.

“We will have a very clear European position on this issue, because customs policy is the responsibility of the European Union, not individual member states“, Merz told ARD television.

The overall tariffs on imports of goods into the United States will be increased from 10 to 15%, the US president announced earlier today, after the US Supreme Court overturned the tariffs imposed by the head of state last year.

Merz said the common European position would be ready by the time he visits Washington in a little over a week. DPA commented that the visit has not yet been officially announced. Merz visited Trump at the White House in Washington for the first and only time in June last year.

France also called for a united response from the European Union, Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade Nicolas Forisier told Agence France-Presse.
