French President Emmanuel Macron has sent a letter to US President Donald Trump asking him to lift US sanctions against several European citizens, La Tribune Dimanche reported.
Among the people for whom the French leader has asked to lift sanctions are two French citizens - former European Commissioner Thierry Breton and International Criminal Court judge Nicolas Guillou.
“The sanctions imposed on Thierry Breton undermine European regulatory autonomy and are also based on flawed analyses“, Macron wrote in the letter. According to La Tribune, Breton has been criticized in the United States for passing the Digital Services Act to protect European sovereignty from the influence of American platforms.
“The sanctions imposed on Nicolas Guillou undermine the principle of judicial independence and the mandate of the International Criminal Court,“ the French president said in a letter. The measures against Guillou came after the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defense minister.
The United States imposed sanctions on Breton last December and on Guillou in August. They are banned from entering the United States.
