177 prisoners have been released in Venezuela since the Amnesty Law for Democratic Coexistence came into force on February 20.

Jorge Arias, president of the Special Commission to Monitor the Implementation of the Amnesty Law, announced this on Venezolana de Television.

“Today we can say that thanks to the law, 177 prisoners have been released and 2,021 have their legal restrictions completely lifted“, Arias said. He also noted that over 800 prisoners were released in December 2025 and January 2026.

In late January, Delcy Rodriguez, the presidential envoy to Venezuela, announced a general amnesty initiative aimed at promoting national reconciliation and peace.

The law covers the period from January 1, 1999 to the present. Those convicted of serious crimes against humanity, human rights violations, premeditated murder, corruption, and drug trafficking are not eligible for amnesty.
