Two Missouri deputies were shot, one during a roadblock and the other hours later in a shootout with the suspect, who was also killed, US authorities said, the Associated Press reported.

The shooting initially began during a roadblock south of Highlandville in Christian County, southwest Missouri, on Wednesday, Sheriff Brad Cole said, as quoted by local media.

About 100 police officers, deputies and state troopers were involved in the search for the suspect, Cole added. He said officers from the U.S. Marshals Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also involved in the operation.

The suspected shooter's car was found abandoned a few miles south near Reeds Spring, and law enforcement searched the area around it, Cole said. Sheriff's deputies picked up a heat signal coming from a nearby wooded area. Cole said the suspect opened fire, wounding three of them.

A Christian County deputy was killed and two other Christian and Webster county deputies were wounded, but their injuries were not life-threatening, Cole added.

Law enforcement returned fire, killing the suspect.
