The UN Security Council announced last night, quoted by Agence France-Presse, that it is lifting sanctions against “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham“ - the former Islamist group led by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, which was formerly linked to “Al-Qaeda”.

The decision was made by the sanctions committee, BTA specified.

In 2014, the Security Council listed the group, then known as “Al-Nusra Front“ - a Syrian branch of “Al Qaeda“, on the list of sanctioned jihadist movements.

In 2016, the group announced that it was severing its ties with “Al Qaeda“ and renamed itself “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham“, but remained under both names on the UN sanctions list.

Shortly after coming to power in December 2024, Ahmed al-Sharaa announced the dissolution of all armed groups that overthrew Bashar Assad, including his own group, AFP recalls.
