Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh and the commander of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Mohammad Pakpour, were killed in Israeli strikes, Reuters reported, citing three sources familiar with the matter, BTA reports.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said shortly afterwards that his country may have lost "one or two commanders, but almost all high-ranking officials are alive and safe".
Earlier, the Israeli military announced that it had targeted representatives of the Iranian leadership by bombing a number of locations in the capital Tehran, when it launched a coordinated attack on Iran with the United States this morning, DPA notes.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Massoud Pezeshkian were the targets of the joint US-Israeli attacks, an Israeli official said, quoted by Reuters.
He did not give details.
Earlier, Iranian news agencies reported that Ayatollah Khamenei had been taken to a safe place and that Pezeshkian was also safe.
