Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez today expressed his strong disagreement with the attack on Iran by the US and Israel, warning that there was a risk that the conflict could turn into “Russian roulette“ with the lives of millions of people, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

Sanchez reacted after US President Donald Trump threatened to cut off trade with Madrid over Spain's position on the conflict.

“This is how great disasters for humanity begin. "You cannot play Russian roulette with the fate of millions of people," Sanchez said in a televised address to the nation against Trump.

Tensions between the two NATO allies have increased since Sanchez condemned the US-Israeli bombing of Iran as reckless and illegal, and later banned US aircraft from using naval and air bases in southern Spain for the offensive against Tehran.

The Spanish prime minister stressed that the world cannot solve its problems through conflict and bombing.

“The position of the Spanish government can be summed up in three words: “No to war“, he said, adding that this position is not insincere, but consistent.

“We will not become complicit in something that is harmful to the world and contrary to our values and interests, just to "avoid retaliation," Sanchez said, apparently alluding to Trump's trade threats.

Sanchez recalled the negative consequences of the war in Iraq - from the rise of jihadist terrorism to the surge in energy prices - to emphasize that this attack on Iran could have equally unpredictable consequences and would not lead to a more just international order.
