A police officer responding to a burglary call in Baltimore was shot in the leg today by a gunman who was later shot by another officer, authorities said, as quoted by the Associated Press.

During the tense situation, a woman jumped out of a window, and another was held at gunpoint by the man before he was shot, Police Commissioner Richard Worley said.

“It all happened relatively quickly because he was shooting at our officers,“ Worley said.

The officer, who was shot in the leg, is in stable condition at a specialized trauma hospital. Dr. Thomas Scalia praised his "colleague" who put a tourniquet in place.

“We are very grateful that the injured officer's injuries are not serious, and that there were no serious casualties among the people in the neighborhood,“ Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott told reporters. “We express our sympathy to the injured officer and his family and even to the family of the deceased“.

According to Worley, the deceased man was a relative of the people living in the home.

Names were not released. The Baltimore police union, the Fraternal Order of Police, which represents officers, said that "all officers involved are in good spirits."
