The UN Security Council has rejected a Russian-proposed resolution on the Middle East conflict.

Four countries supported the resolution, while nine abstained. The veto-wielding United States and Latvia voted against it.

In the proposed draft resolution, Russia called on all parties to the conflict to immediately cease hostilities and refrain from escalation. She condemned the attacks on civilians and infrastructure, stressed the need for their protection in accordance with international humanitarian law, and stressed the importance of ensuring the security of all countries in the region.

Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya called the vote in the Security Council on the Russian draft resolution on the Middle East a "test of judgment," noting that the document did not contradict the resolution proposed by Bahrain.

"This vote is a litmus test and, excuse the expression, a test of judgment," Nebenzya was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti. He called the Russian draft resolution necessary and expressed disappointment that the Security Council did not adopt it.

The UN Security Council approved a resolution proposed by Bahrain calling on Iran to stop attacks on third parties, with 13 members voting “in favor”, while Russia and China abstained.

The resolution qualifies Tehran's strikes as a violation of international law and a threat to peace, deplores the attacks on civilian targets and civilian casualties, demands an immediate cessation of the attacks and condemns any actions or threats that impede shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The resolution does not mention the US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
