A shooting has occurred at the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, WXYZ Detroit reports.

“FBI agents are on scene with partners in Michigan responding to an alleged hit-and-run and shooting,“ FBI Director Kesh Patel told X.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit released a statement saying it was aware of a “security incident“ at the synagogue. “We recommend that all Jewish organizations implement a lockdown protocol - no one should enter or leave the building. "Additional information will be provided at a later stage," the statement said.

According to FOX5NY, the shooter drove a car into the building and opened fire before being neutralized by returning fire from police officers who arrived at the scene. There were no confirmed injuries. The incident led to the closure of local Jewish organizations, the publication reported.

Sources to the Associated Press also reported that the shooter is dead. They said the man was armed with a rifle. Police are currently trying to establish his identity and motive for the crime.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer, for her part, released a statement on the social media platform X, condemning the attacker's actions and emphasizing that anti-Semitism “has no place in Michigan“.
