A supporter of the "Islamic State" opened fire in a classroom at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, The Washington Post reported, citing the FBI.

According to the publication, one person was killed and several others were injured in the attack.

The shooter was neutralized by students. According to FBI Special Agent Dominic Evans of the Norfolk field office, the attacker was shot.

According to the agency, the shooter is former US National Guard member Muhammad Baylor Jalloh. In 2017, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison for attempting to support the Islamic State. He was released in 2024, two days before Christmas. The attack on the university is being investigated as an act of terrorism.

CBS News has learned that one of the students in the classroom killed the gunman with a knife.

A law enforcement source told CBS News that the gunman entered the classroom in the College of Business and began shooting, killing the professor and wounding two others before being "overpowered" by students.

"The brave students in the room overpowered him, and if it wasn't for them, I'm not sure what else he would have done," Dominic Evans, special agent in charge of the FBI's Norfolk field office, told reporters Thursday.

A day earlier, a man armed with a shotgun rammed a car into a synagogue in a Detroit suburb. Security officers opened fire on him. The White House called the attack a “horrific event“ and expressed support for the Jewish community in Michigan.
