A Polish citizen has been arrested in Greece on espionage charges, the Greek news agency ANA-MPA reports. The arrest took place on March 12 in Souda, on the island of Crete, BTA reported.
According to police authorities, the 58-year-old man lived in a camper in the Marathi beach area and filmed ships entering the military base on the island. The materials he collected were sent to Poland.
The Polish citizen has denied the charges. Photos of warships were found on his confiscated mobile phone.
The police have also seized other devices that will be analyzed. The Souda base on the island of Crete is used by the armed forces of Greece, the United States and NATO.
The naval base was placed on high alert in late February. After Iran threatened to strike American targets, access to unauthorized personnel was suspended.
The US aircraft carrier "Gerald Ford" (USS Gerald R Ford) was stationed at the base until February 26, when it headed for the Eastern Mediterranean after refueling.
