Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro remains “in stable condition“ in intensive care after bacterial pneumonia, but his kidney function has deteriorated, the hospital where he was admitted said, quoted by Agence France-Presse.

Jair Bolsonaro, 70, was admitted yesterday morning with a high temperature, sweating and chills after being transferred from a prison in Brazil, where he is serving a sentence for an attempted coup.

The former head of state “is in stable condition, but there has been a deterioration in his kidney function and an increase in inflammatory markers“, the statement said.

The lung infection is the result of an episode of bronchoaspiration, a recurring problem related to the consequences of a knife wound to the abdomen received during an election rally in 2018. Since then, the former far-right president has undergone multiple surgeries and suffers from diaphragm problems, sometimes accompanied by vomiting, which his doctors have identified as the direct cause of the current infection. He is receiving antibiotic treatment and respiratory physiotherapy.

Sentenced in September last year to 27 years in prison for trying to hold on to power after losing the 2022 election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro is serving his sentence in the Papuda prison complex in Brazil.

The country's Supreme Court has refused several times to allow him to serve his sentence under house arrest, AFP notes.
