The US administration wants other countries to help protect ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. US Ambassador to the UN Mike Walz said this on CNN.

As for escorting [ships], in the 1980s <...>, when Iran last tried to disrupt global energy supplies, forces from France, the UK and even the Soviet Union escorted their tankers <...>“, he said. “And I think that's what President [Donald] Trump is asking the world to do. "He says the whole world is affected," Walz added.

"And we certainly welcome, encourage, and even require their participation to help their own economies," the U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations stressed, referring to the participation of other countries in protecting ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. "At the same time, the U.S. military will continue to strike Iranian forces, their missile boats and their drones to keep the strait open."
