Israel hit a key bridge linking southern Lebanon to the rest of the country on Monday after the Israeli army was ordered to destroy all bridges over the Litani River and accelerate the destruction of residential buildings near Lebanon's border with Israel, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

The destruction of bridges and residential buildings marks a significant escalation in Israel's military campaign in Lebanon, which has been embroiled in the Middle East war since the pro-Iranian Shiite movement "Hezbollah" opened fire on Israel.

Today's strike hit one of the main routes connecting southern and central Lebanon.

An Israeli army spokesman announced earlier today that Israeli forces would hit the bridge. The Israeli army has already destroyed three bridges in southern Lebanon in the past 10 days.

Earlier today, an Israeli was killed in his car near the border with Lebanon. The Israeli army said it was shooting from Lebanese territory. This is the first Israeli civilian victim of fire from Lebanon in the current war, Reuters notes. The deaths of two Israeli soldiers were also reported, killed in combat in southern Lebanon.
