Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said last night that members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) based in Lebanon are directing Hezbollah's operations in the group's war against Israel, Agence France-Presse reported.
In an interview with Saudi television station “Hadath“ The prime minister again criticized the pro-Iranian movement, which, with its strikes against Israel in response to the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, provoked massive attacks by the Israeli army in Lebanon.
“It was said that this war is a retaliation for the assassination of Khamenei, which means that this war was imposed on us“, Salam said.
He then recalled the strike by an Iranian drone against a British base in Cyprus earlier this month, claiming that the responsibility for it lies with the IRGC. Nicosia had earlier said that the drone was probably launched by “Hezbollah“ from Lebanese territory.
“The Revolutionary Guard is the one who is here and, unfortunately, is leading the military operations in Lebanon“, Salam said. "These people have fake passports and are entering the country illegally," he added.
Earlier this month, the Lebanese government took the unprecedented step of banning Hezbollah's military activities, calling on the Shiite group to hand over its weapons to the state.
"We are committed to the decisions we have taken and are working to implement them," the Lebanese prime minister assured.
