NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said he could not confirm whether the missiles fired at Diego Garcia were Iranian intercontinental ballistic missiles, and that the alliance was still assessing the situation.
"We cannot confirm this at the moment, so we are investigating the matter," Mark Rutte said in an interview with CBS News.
"We are still assessing the situation, but if this is true, it means that they already have this capability. "If it is not true, we know that they are very close to acquiring this capability," the Alliance's secretary general added.
Mark Rutte said that US President Donald Trump's efforts to limit Iran's missile and nuclear capabilities were "crucial" for global security.
The NATO secretary general warned that Iran's acquisition of such capabilities would pose a "direct threat ... to Israel, to the region, to Europe, but also to stability in the world."
