At least 70 people were killed in an attack in Petit Rivière in Haiti's Artibonite department amid a conflict with the "Grand Grief" gang, Reuters reported, citing a human rights director.

Preliminary reports from local police indicated a lower death toll - 16 killed and 10 injured.

Armed members of the "Grand Grief" group attacked the Jean Denis district at around 3 am, local authorities said.

The attack followed a United Nations report that more than 2,000 people had been displaced recently due to armed attacks in the nearby Verret district, which has forced residents of Petite Rivière to flee their homes.

The Artibonite department, a major agricultural region, is one of the hardest hit by gang-related violence outside the capital Port-au-Prince.

In March, the United States offered a reward of up to $3 million for information on the financial activities of “Grand Grief“ and “Vive Ansanm“.

Washington has added the two groups, which include hundreds of gangs, to its list of terrorist organizations.
