US President Donald Trump mocked yesterday, attacking Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron, after a series of reproaches against the leaders of NATO member states, whom he criticized for not participating in the war against Iran, reported Agence France-Presse.
“Macron, whose wife treats him extremely badly... he is still recovering from the punch he received in the jaw“, the American president said in a video briefly uploaded to the official page on “YouTube“ of the White House, which then blocked access to it.
Trump appeared to be referring to a widely shared online video from last May showing Brigitte Macron placing both hands on the French president's face in a motion that resembled a light slap.
The US president also said he had asked the French head of state for military support in the Gulf: “I said, Emmanuel, we would like to get some help in the Gulf, even though we are breaking all the records in terms of eliminating bad guys and destroying ballistic missiles“.
Trump then imitated his colleague in a French accent: “No, no, no... we can't do that, Donald. We will be able to do it after we win the war“.
Macron has long been a target of the US president, who accuses him of not giving permission for US aircraft to fly over French territory as part of the war against Iran, which began on February 28.
In general, this week Trump has intensified his belligerent statements against NATO, calling the alliance a “paper tiger“ on his profile on “Truth Social“. The US “will remember this“, the US president said earlier at a cabinet meeting.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday questioned the transatlantic relationship with NATO as never before, saying that the US should “reconsider“ its relationship with the alliance after the war against Iran is over.
