UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the Middle East is on the brink of a larger war, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reported.
Guterres called for an immediate end to Israeli and US strikes on Iran and those of Iran on its neighboring countries.
"We are on the brink of a larger war in the Middle East, which will have dramatic consequences for the entire world," Guterres told journalists.
"Many aspects of the conflict are unclear, but one thing is not clear: if the war continues, it will lead to an even greater escalation. The spiral of death and destruction must be broken," the secretary-general urged.
Turkey warned that there was a risk that the escalating hostilities in the Middle East could spread to the region amid ongoing US-Israeli attacks on Iran and called for a return to diplomacy, the Turkish Defense Ministry said today, as Anadolu Agency (AA) reported for BTA under an information-sharing agreement between the two agencies.
Defense Ministry spokesman Zeki Akturk said that the conflict, which began with Israeli and US strikes on Iran and intensified after Iran attacked third countries, continues to pose a risk of a wider regional war.
