Former Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has called for a "comprehensive peace deal" with the United States, DPA reported, BTA reported.

In an article published in "Foreign Affairs" magazine, Zarif stressed that the underlying conflict must be resolved to ensure a comprehensive peace deal, not a potentially unstable truce.

Both countries, he writes, should "use this catastrophe as an opportunity to end 47 years of enmity".

The United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28. Since then, dozens of top Iranian military and political figures have been killed, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has responded with missile strikes on Israel and Gulf Arab states, and its military has virtually blocked shipping in the Strait of Hormuz with attacks and threats, sending oil prices soaring. A quick end to the war is still far from certain.

"Continued hostilities will lead to even greater losses of precious human lives and irreplaceable resources without actually changing the existing stalemate," stressed Zarif, who served as Iran's foreign minister from 2013 to 2021.
