The Iraqi parliament elected Nizar Amidi, a candidate from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, as the new president of the country, INA reported.
According to the agency, 227 members of parliament voted for his candidacy. The second candidate, Mutana Nadir, received 15 votes, and seven ballots were invalid. It was previously reported that the country's current president, Abdel Latif Rashid, had decided to withdraw from the presidential race.
Amidi, 57, was the environment minister from 2022 to 2024 and spent more than 15 years in the country's presidential administration, including in positions as a senior adviser and head of the presidential office.
