Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that Donald Trump will remain in the White House for another two and a half years, and what will happen after that is unknown.
The head of state explained why he does not consider the American president to be a sufficient guarantee of Ukraine's security.
According to him, the US is convinced that Russia will not dare to attack Ukraine again, fearing a harsh response from the White House.
„For example, the US says „President Trump“. President Trump is here for another two and a half years, and then what are we going to do?“, Zelensky noted.
The idea that Russia might refrain from a new attack on Ukraine out of fear of the US president is not a sufficient guarantee of security, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, quoted by UNIAN.
According to the Ukrainian leader, the lack of international partners on the contact line is an obstacle to deterring Russia from a new invasion.
„What security guarantees are being given to Ukraine? If our partners are not present on the contact line, then why wouldn't the Russians launch a new offensive after some time? Why? I just don't understand why. I don't see any reason. What will deter them? What?“, Zelensky noted.
According to Zelensky, the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas, as Russia has demanded, would be a strategic defeat for Ukraine. Zelensky recalled that the Defense Forces maintain a presence not only in the Donetsk region, but also in part of the Luhansk region. If our country withdraws its troops from the Donbass, it will become weaker, since fortifications have been built in the region. The Ukrainian president added that approximately 200,000 people live in the territory of Donbass under Ukrainian control. The loss of this territory to the enemy would also weaken the morale of the Ukrainian army.
„And when, for example, our American partners give a signal that it is time and we can build new defense structures, and they are ready to give money, why should we do this? The urbanized zone is still stronger than any lines that are being built on the ground“, he added.
„The question is how many people have already died there. I think this step is irresponsible at this time.
