The European Union has started preparing the 21st package of sanctions against Russia, said today the head of European diplomacy Kaya Kalas, quoted by Reuters, writes BTA.

The agency notes that the statement comes just a day after the EU approved the 20th package of sanctions against Moscow over the invasion of Ukraine.

"We are indeed preparing the next 21st package of sanctions", Kalas told journalists before the informal summit of EU leaders in Cyprus.

"This sends a very clear signal to Russia that Ukraine is more important to us than to them, and we will continue to support it,", he added Callas.

The EU should tax excess profits of energy companies to finance measures to protect European individuals and companies from higher energy prices, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said today, amid rising energy prices as a result of the conflict in the Middle East.

Speaking at an informal summit of EU leaders in Cyprus, Sanchez added that Spain had also proposed greater flexibility in fiscal rules for investment in renewable energy.
