A second round of presidential elections is taking place in Slovakia, which is expected to be contested. The main theme during the campaign was foreign policy. In the first round, the pro-European former Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivan Korchok received the most support - 42.5%. In second place with 37.1 percent support was the "Voice" party broadcast by the ruling parliamentary coalition party. Peter Pellegrini, who is the speaker of the parliament and an ally of Prime Minister Robert Fizzo, who questioned the sovereignty of Kiev and called for peace with Russia, recalls BNR.
Korchok is at the other extreme - he is staunchly pro-Ukraine, a fierce critic of the populist government and supported by the opposition. In case of victory, Korchok could balance the anti-Ukrainian position of the Slovak government, analysts believe. However, his victory is not certain as former judge Stefan Harabin, who came third in the first round with 12% of voters after criticizing the EU and praising Russian President Vladimir Putin, said that "his voters will know what to do".
The Slovak president ratifies international treaties, appoints supreme judges, is commander-in-chief of the armed forces and can veto laws passed by parliament. The head of state of the NATO and EU member state with a population of 5,400,000 people has a five-year term.
