Tragedy in Mozambique: More than 90 dead when fishing boat capsizes

The passengers on board were fleeing a cholera epidemic

More than 90 people died after a fishing boat capsized off the northern coast of Mozambique on Sunday, the country's authorities said, cited by DPA and BTA.

The passengers on board were fleeing a cholera epidemic and were traveling from Lunga to the island of Mozambique.

According to the authorities, the boat had a maximum capacity of 100 people, but there were about 130 on board.

Mozambique news agency AIM reported that according to the maritime administration, the vessel may have sunk due to strong turbulence in the area.

Mozambique is affected by the worst cholera epidemic in the last 25 years, UNICEF said. Since the beginning of the epidemic in September 2022, more than 37 thousand cases of the disease have been registered.
