The Russian peacekeeping contingent is withdrawing from Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani media reported. The information was confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

The Russian peacekeeping contingent was temporarily deployed in the region following the results of a tripartite agreement signed on November 10, 2020 between the leaders of Azerbaijan, Russia and Armenia.

„Yes, that is true”, Peskov said in response to a question at a media briefing. He did not provide any details. Some Azerbaijani media wrote about the beginning of the withdrawal of the peacekeepers on April 16.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. Clashes between the Azerbaijani army and the Armenian occupiers have been taking place there for years. After Azerbaijan's victory, the authorities in Armenia accused Russia of betraying the Armenians. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan even admitted that Armenia made a strategic mistake by relying on Russia for its security.
