French President Emmanuel Macron issued a warning about the rise of the extreme right, calling it “this evil wind“ which is “blowing in Europe”, and called on people to wake up and protect democracy less than two weeks before the European elections, France Press reported, quoted by BTA.

„Let us see the fascination with authoritarian regimes around us, let us see the illiberal moment we are experiencing,”, the French head of state said in a speech to young Europeans in Dresden, in eastern Germany, where he is on a state visit. “The extreme right, this evil wind that is blowing in Europe is a reality, so let us wake up”, he added.

During the second day of his visit to Germany, today Macron honored the victims of the Holocaust in Berlin, DPA reported.

Together with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, he visited the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, located near the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building in the heart of Berlin.

The two heads of state placed wreaths with flowers in the colors of their national flags. They were accompanied by their wives Brigitte Macron and Elke Budenbender. The presidential couples walked around the memorial, built from rows of large concrete blocks, and visited the museum in the complex.

About 6 million Jews were killed by the German Nazi regime in Europe during the Holocaust.
